Doug Wood, Vice President

Doug Wood is a retired educator living in North Muskegon, Michigan. He worked for 32 years as

an administrator for the Kalamazoo Public Schools, primarily in Adult and Community

Education. Doug returned to Muskegon, where he had grown up, to become the Director of the

Orchard View Public Schools Community Education Program. He has a Bachelor’s Degree from

Western Michigan University and a Master’s Degree from Eastern Michigan University. He and

his wife, Kim Marie, have been married 47 years and have two adult children and three

grandchildren.

Doug became involved with the Family Promise of the Lakeshore through membership at

Community United Methodist Church in Muskegon. CUMC has partnered with First Lutheran

Church for a number of years and the youth group at the church has a history of providing

meals in that partnership. This year, CUMC became a full partner with Family Promise and is

providing four full weeks of meals for the program.

Doug has led a number of youth mission trips for his churches in Kalamazoo and North

Muskegon. He also serves as an Ambassador for Appalachia Service Project, a mission-

focused organization based in Tennessee. Locally, Doug serves as the chair of the Muskegon

County Environmental Coordinating Council, Has a number of roles in his church, and is most

proud of his role as PopPop to the grandkids.

Sheila Wahamaki, Secretary

Moved to the Muskegon area in 2000 with her husband Kirk

and children Christopher and Katie. She recently retired from Muskegon Community

College as the Director of the Center for Theater. Sheila and her husband are members

of First Presbyterian Church of Muskegon. It was through the church’s partnership with

Family Promise that she first became aware of the organization. She stepped up to be a

Family Promise board member after reading Matthew Desmond’s book Evicted, (where

he wrote “Home is where children find safety and security, where we find our identities,

where citizenship starts. It usually starts with believing you are part of a community, and

that is essential to having a stable home.”) AND discovering the unique approach

Family Promise offers by keeping homeless families together and offering them the

support needed to change their lives.
