Sheila Wahamaki, Secretary
Moved to the Muskegon area in 2000 with her husband Kirk
and children Christopher and Katie. She recently retired from Muskegon Community
College as the Director of the Center for Theater. Sheila and her husband are members
of First Presbyterian Church of Muskegon. It was through the church’s partnership with
Family Promise that she first became aware of the organization. She stepped up to be a
Family Promise board member after reading Matthew Desmond’s book Evicted, (where
he wrote “Home is where children find safety and security, where we find our identities,
where citizenship starts. It usually starts with believing you are part of a community, and
that is essential to having a stable home.”) AND discovering the unique approach
Family Promise offers by keeping homeless families together and offering them the
support needed to change their lives.
